History

Pre- 1898

Brothers Fran and Bill Bell come to Oxford and set up a local telephone system with two rural lines.

1950

Planning for conversion to dial phones begins.

1951

The company known as the Marquette-Adams Telephone Company becomes the Marquette-Adams Telephone Cooperative, Inc.

1954

With a loan from the Rural Electrification Administration, new equipment makes it possible to provide dial service to the subscribers of its Oxford, Brooks and Endeavor exchanges. At that time, the cooperative has 503 access lines and four employees.

1968

The Board of Directors seeks a third REA loan and work begins to provide all single-party service.

1970

The majority of the facilities are buried underground. The co-op is far ahead of the services provided to neighbors in the surrounding areas.

1978

The first computer at the co-op is a small Apple. Later, more computers enable it to produce its own monthly bills.

1983

The first capital credit checks for the years 1954-1958 are sent out.

Late 1980's

The first capital credit checks for the years 1954-1958 are sent out.

1994

The first satellite dish is installed in the co-op. The co-op also becomes involved in a cellular partnership covering several counties.

1996

The Internet arrives in Oxford. Shortly after, Internet is also offered in the nearby areas of Adams, Westfield, Montello and Arkdale.

1997

By constantly increasing the fiber optic cables, it has become possible to offer High-Speed Internet as well as television through the phone lines rather than having a dish on the roof.

1998

New business office is completed.

2009

The cooperative finishes converting to the new Soft Switch which provides an enhanced platform for new service offerings. Hi-Definition Television is available to all Cooperative members.

What is a Cooperative?

Telecommunications providers cooperatively enhance Wisconsin’s quality of life and economic opportunities through improved infrastructure and services. Over 100 years ago, rural telephone cooperatives were established to provide service in sparsely populated areas where telephone companies thought they could not make a profit. Cooperatives such as the Marquette-Adams Telephone Cooperative are operated by boards of directors elected by local members which are the cooperative’s customers.

Unlike for-profit telecom companies, cooperatives distribute capital credits to their members. Any surplus beyond the cooperative’s limited return on investment and the costs of operating the business are returned to its members in proportion to their spending or patronage of the products and services offered by the cooperative such as long distance calling, local telephone service, digital TV and High-Speed Internet. The more business a member does with the cooperative, the greater that member’s refund at the end of the year.

Cooperatives are partners in our community, investing in economic development and human involvement that will keep our hometowns and rural areas alive and well in the years ahead.

The Marquette-Adams Telephone Cooperative is committed to continuing the cooperative spirit upon which this company was founded, to provide high quality telephone service to its customers, and to continue to investigate new technology and endeavors for the benefit of the company and its members.
